Rebates for ENERGY STAR Manufactured and Modular Homes
Progress Energy Carolinas' Service Area

Progress Energy Carolinas' (PEC) is now offering incentives as part of the Home Advantage program to encourage sales of new ENERGY STAR manufactured and modular homes in their service area. PEC will pay manufactured home producers and retailers, or modular home builders, a $400 rebate for each new ENERGY STAR home equipped with a minimum of 14 SEER cooling equipment sold to customers of Progress Energy in North Carolina or South Carolina. Homes with 15 SEER cooling equipment are eligible for a $700 rebate.

Progress Energy offers a 5% rate discount to owners of Home Advantage ENERGY STAR qualified homes. In South Carolina, the homebuyer is also eligible for a $750 state income tax credit and elimination of the sales tax on the purchase price of the home. And North Carolina retailers also may be eligible for an additional $500 rebate per home under the state's Upgrade & Save Program.

With these combined incentives, the program is a win-win for all involved, with the homebuyer purchasing a more comfortable and efficient home that will help lower their monthly energy bills and qualify them for state incentives and utility discounts, and now the rebates for manufactured home manufacturers and retailers and modular home builders.

For many utilities, improved efficiency can be a cost-effective strategy for reducing electric demand and system peaks, factors that reduce the need to build additional generating capacity. Underwriting a portion of the costs of ENERGY STAR construction through a rebate program is a good fit with their overall efficiency portfolio and reaches a segment of their customer base that has been difficult to reach in the past.

The Systems Building Research Alliance (SBRA) is administering the program on behalf of Progress Energy. To help retailers, communities and modular builders sell ENERGY STAR homes in PEC's service area, SBRA will provide free marketing materials to participating companies, including Home Advantage point-of-purchase signage, a sales video DVD, posters, consumer brochures and static cling window decals.

Retailers and modular builders should contact their manufacturer representatives for information about their Home Advantage ENERGY STAR product options. If you have any questions, contact Gwynne Koch, SBRA ENERGY STAR Program Coordinator, at 212-496-0900 ext. 12 or gkoch@research-alliance.org.

Steps to Collecting the Rebate

Step 1. Verify the Power Provider

Ask the homebuyer first. If you aren't sure, contact Gwynne Koch at SBRA at (212) 496-0900 ext. 12 or gkoch@research-alliance.org, and she'll check for you. Be sure to have the homebuyer's name and home address on hand.

Step 2. Order the Home

Contact your manufacturer representative for availability and pricing of ENERGY STAR options. When ordering, be sure to request a home that meets the Home Advantage ENERGY STAR requirements.

Step 3. Select Heating/Cooling Equipment

Minimum 14 SEER heat pump or air conditioning equipment is required for the $400 rebate. Homes with 15 SEER cooling equipment are eligible for the $700 rebate. Contact the home manufacturer and/or equipment supplier for more information.

Step 4. Verify ENERGY STAR Installation Items

Complete the Site Installation Checklist and confirm that the ENERGY STAR labels are affixed to the home. Sign the Checklist and fax or mail the completed Checklist to the manufacturer. Keep a copy for your records.
